The day after Whole 30

Tuesday

So it's the first day after Whole 30 is over, and I'm a little hesitant to do anything differently. I haven't really thought through how I'm going to prepare for reintroduction of certain foods.

My goal right now is simple:
  • Eat what sounds good to me.
  • Keep my choices as whole and as fresh as possible.
  • Continue planning for success (keeping the fridge stocked with healthy choices and committing to trying new recipes I'd pinned).
  • Make an effort to continue blogging and recording my results and experiences.
  • Give some serious thought to how I want to live and eat going forward.
Breakfast / Lunch

One great thing I learned on this journey is that if I give meal planning just a little bit of thought (sooner than later), I can come up with a plan that keeps me on track. This has been a lifesaver and prevents me from scrambling at the last minute to find something or putting myself in a situation where I've got limited options.

For instance, I had a doctor's appointment this morning at 9:00 and physical therapy after that at 10:00, so I wasn't going to get to work until 11:00. While I was in the shower, I thought through my options for breakfast, lunch and snacks. I'd considered mixing some scrambled eggs with the leftover roasted sweet and red potatoes from last night. But then what for lunch?

But then I got a better idea. I could make a giant smoothie for breakfast and drink that in the car on the way to the doctor. And have my scrambled egg hash thing for lunch. So I made the smoothie, and packed my lunch bag with scrambled eggs in a Tupperware container, my baggie of potatoes, and half an avocado. At lunch, I reheated the eggs and potatoes on a paper plate and added the diced avocado on top, and it was SO good! I'll have to make that again, for sure.

And since I'd added enough protein the smoothie (kale, avocado, sliced almonds), I didn't start getting hungry until well after 11:00.

Dinner out - Japanese

Maya has been wanting to go out for a while, especially this past month, we really haven't gone out much at all. Mostly my doing. I didn't want the temptation.

But I agreed to go out for Japanese, her favorite. And part of me worried, is this going to be the night I blow it? The night I throw away everything for a giant plate of fried rice awesomeness (the butter, the soy, the gluten, the MSG . . .everything I've avoided for the last month)?

I thought about sticking to sushi . . but isn't that the same thing? The sauces, the rice? I honestly didn't know what I'd choose, but I decided to trust my taste buds and my new appreciation for whole food eating and see what spoke to me on the menu.

And my body and brain didn't let me down!

I decided to have my first glass of wine after 30 days. The first sip tasted a little weird (wasn't the greatest house wine), but by the second and third sip, I started remembering why I liked it so much. And because I hadn't had any in a while, it hit me right away.

I sipped it slowly (and ordered another), and enjoyed my Ahi Tuna appetizer with avocado (marinated in a spicy soy sauce). Technically, I can eat soy sauce now, so I didn't consider that too far off track. It was presented in a beautiful martini glass, and the chopsticks forced me to take my time. By the time the chef had cooked the meal on the table, the side of hibachi veggies I ordered as my entree was plenty filling. It was nice that I wasn't starving when I got to the restaurant (I'd had a beef jerky at home an hour before), so it wasn't that hard a decision to pass on the entree I used to get (filet mignon with shrimp, an order and a half of fried rice, soup, salad, veggies).

And riding home, I felt delightfully full. Not gross and bloated with buttons popping like EVERY other time I've ever left a Japanese restaurant.

I can live like this. 😊
  • Breakfast: Smoothie (frozen peaches, pineapple, strawberries, 1/2 apple with skin, avocado, almonds, kale, grapefruit, water)
  • Snacks: Beef jerky
  • Lunch: Scrambled eggs, roasted sweet and red potatoes, diced avocado
  • Dinner: Avocado and ahi tuna tartare, hibachi vegetables, two glasses of Cabernet
