Marriage retreat weekend - Feb. 3-4
Four days after Whole 30, and things have gotten a little off kilter.
I worked from home on Friday and hadn't really planned anything for meals, figuring I'd just find something in the fridge when I got hungry. But my mind wasn't in it and before I knew it, I had cravings for things that I haven't eaten in weeks. Cereal, ice cream, sandwiches.
I stood in front of the pantry at least three times, hoping that something Whole 30 compliant would jump out at me. No such luck.
I had a Scotch egg for breakfast with two cups of coffee, and that was fine.
But by lunch, I really didn't want to ruin my progress, so I made a big smoothie loaded with fruit, veggies and avocado. The problem was, a few ours later, I was hungry again.
So I ate some salami wrapped around a few sugar snap peas and cherry tomatoes.
Before heading to Tennessee
I knew Tony and I were going to get on the road for the retreat around 5:00, and I didn't want to eat fast food. So I picked off the breading from a few Publix chicken tenders and called that dinner.
We got to the retreat just in time for the first session at 8:15, and by the time it ended, the hotel restaurant was closed. But they'd made arrangements for us to have brownies and giant cookies. Of course, by then I was starving! And I rationalized, I'm done with Whole 30, so I ate a sugar cookie bigger than my hand. Sadly, it was delicious.
I'd also packed a bottle of wine, and while we relaxed in our room, I had a few small plastic cups of that as well. Not a lot -- it was definitely enjoyable.
I went to bed curious to know how I'd feel the next day.
Saturday
When I woke up, I felt a little achy and stiff, and my tennis elbow seemed to be back. I wasn't sure what caused all this, and my first thought was that it was sleeping in a bed that wasn't mine. Or maybe it was car drive.
But could it have been the red wine?
That morning, I had coffee with a little creamer (and no sugar) and fortunately, the breakfast had some great choices (bacon, eggs, fruit, potatoes). There was also a Starbucks in the hotel, and I ordered something I used to get all the time -- Chai Tea Latte. After one sip, I had to dump it out. It was HORRIBLY sweet! I never thought about how much sugar gets added to something that sounds so healthy.
That afternoon, Tony and I went to an Irish pub, and I ordered smoked chicken wings and soup, and more red wine. There weren't many options that were compliant, but fortunately what I ordered was delicious.
Dinner was a different story. The place we ate was one of those diners that has everything, from Italian to Greek to American food. Again, there wasn't much on the menu that was compliant, but I really wanted some Greek pie (spinach, phylo pastry, feta). It was fabulous! I didn't eat the pita bread and ate the Greek salad . . and was very happy that I was able to resist dessert. They were gigantic and looked amazing and the coconut cream pie would've been my first choice. But Tony was full, and that made my decision easier.
The weekend wasn't a huge failure, and it was my first glimpse at how I'd get back to regular life. But I wasn't very systematic about what I reintroduced. I do feel a little achy, but I'm not sure what casued it. It could have been:

- cream in coffee
- sugar cookie
- phylo pastry
- feta cheese
- cream in the Irish soup
- red wine
