Whole 30 - Day 5

It's Friday, and I'm home early. We're expecting snow storms this evening, which means Atlanta has practically shut down since this morning.

I'm on the couch, nothing to do, and I really, really want a glass of wine. But I'll have to suck it up and make some alternative bullshit (Kombucha tea and sparkling flavored water). So not the same.

Today we had our Whole 30 kickoff meeting, and I was kind of glad to be ahead of the curve. They talked about feeling crappy on Day 5, and I have to admit, I don't feel that bad. I don't really feel bad at all . . . I just have this dull craving for something I know I can't have.

I made blueberry muffins for the kids this morning, and a few are still on the stove. They're not quite calling my name, but I seem especially sensitive to all the breads in the kitchen. The hoagie rolls smell so good through the plastic bag. And although I'm not hungry (am I? it's hard to tell lately) . . . I want one so bad I can taste it.

But I'm going to fight it and eat some cashews and blueberries instead. I can't wait for the day when the foods I've avoided for a month don't sound, smell or seem appealing. Because that is NOT the case right now.

I don't feel like I've lost any weight, and part of me wants to break the "no scale" rule and find out, but I know I'll be disappointed if I get on there and realize I haven't. I understand why they don't want you to be fixated on what the scale says, but for me . .  that little bit of motivation helps me stay strong. Knowing that what I've done is working makes me want to keep doing it.

I'm not doing this just for weight loss, but I'll say right now, if after 30 days I haven't lost anything, I'm going to be pissed. Unless I can see the changes. If I have a flat stomach and my arms look more tone, and my face is slimmer and I don't have a double-chin when I look down at my phone, I guess I won't care what the scale says.
  • Breakfast: Smoothie with frozen berries, peaches, pineapple and 1/3 banana, kale, avocado and grapefruit. One hard-boiled egg.
  • Lunch: Catered by Paleo to Go. Not very good. Jerk chicken, pulled pork, cabbage slaw and cauliflower rice. I like all those things, but honestly, I could've made that better myself.
  • Snacks: Dill pickles, sardines, handful of cashews.
  • Dinner: Mesquite-marinated chicken wings (baked until brown and crispy at 375 for an hour), roasted asparagus, mashed potatoes.
Okay, I know the program argues against drinking smoothies. They want you to appreciate the taste, crunch and texture of whole food. I get it. And if ever there's a time where I had to admit I didn't stick to Whole 30 rules completely, this is one of those times.

But I will say, I've modified how I  make my smoothies. I used to add a heaping dump of strawberry Greek yogurt (probably flavored with extra sugar), and now I'm just adding frozen and whole fruits and veggies. And water. Sometimes a few nuts. Sorry Whole 30 if that's not healthy enough for you. I spend my ENTIRE day eating whole, fresh food. If I want to blend it up every now and then, sue me. But I don't think this is hurting my progress.

  1. "Some alternative bullshit".... You kill me, girl! I know I'll feel the same way pretty soon and you'll be past your cravings, so you can laugh at me then. As it is, though, I am on my last day of fun food and drink before I take the plunge, so I'm trying to enjoy it while saying my fond farewells. Oh, and I wrote a haiku:

    'Tis sad we must part.
    Dreams will sustain me until
    I meet cheese again.
