Tournament Day (Sat)
Today was the beginning of Maya's three day volleyball tournament, and I'll be honest. I was a little nervous.
In the past, I've not fully prepared for the long days, the wall to wall vendors, and I ended up spending way too much money for crappy food that made me feel gross. Super sweet smoothies, BBQ, Dippin' Dots ($5 each), slices of Papa Johns pizza (at $7 each) that didn't even taste as good as the real thing. I used to even buy water at $3 a bottle. I was insane!!
But at the time, I didn't know this. So I still worried that I'd be tempted.
I'm pleased to say that I wasn't even tempted a little bit. I'd gone to the store on Friday night and stocked up on really good things to snack on. Last week I ordered some awesome trays to help prepare lunches and meals. These saved the day.
And all in all, it wasn't terrible.
We'd gotten there early and ended up sitting at the bar to wait. I figured, it's now or never. I ordered seltzer with extra lime, and the bartender immediately grabbed a tall soda glass and started filling it with ice. I stopped him and asked if I could have a short glass instead. He didn't care, and he made me new drink, which looked a lot like a vodka tonic. I know it's all psychological, but it tasted better sipping it that way then drinking it through a straw like a teetotaler.
By the time we were seated, our server knew my order and she just kept them coming. The only hard part was when they brought the bread. I thought I was prepared for the bread basket, but this wasn't any ordinary loaf. It was filled with bread of all kinds (thin, fluffy, crusty, some that looked like it has seeds or raisins or something and butter that looked divine). All obviously homemade.
But I held strong and just kept drinking my limey seltzer.
Tony had four of his favorite drink (Old Fashioned with honey bourbon), and Chris's new girlfriend ordered a full-bodied, dry Cabernet. I knew immediately that she and I would be friends. :-)
Dinner was excellent. Super overpriced, but ridiculously delicious. I'd scanned the menu earlier and knew exactly what I was going to order. And fortunately my serving was huge, so I ate half and had lunch for the next day. And because Tony suddenly had a designated driver, he felt free to drink with free abandon. Which yes, he regretted the next day.
I'm proud of the fact that I made it through my first social event, and came out stronger.

I'm pleased to say that I wasn't even tempted a little bit. I'd gone to the store on Friday night and stocked up on really good things to snack on. Last week I ordered some awesome trays to help prepare lunches and meals. These saved the day.
They're little bento boxes, and I packed two of them for the day. One with raspberries, blueberries, strawberries and a banana. And another with cherry tomatoes, sliced orange pepper, spicy banana peppers, sliced hard salami, guacamole and sugar snap peas. I made salami wraps with a snap pea, orange pepper and banana pepper, and it was freaking awesome.
People actually looked on with envy while I ate, and I could tell they'd wished their lunch looked as tasty as mine. Even thought I'd packed some extra reinforcements (pistachios, banana chips, beef jerky, Larabars), I didn't need them.
Date Night
Tony's best friend is dating again, and he wanted us to meet someone he thinks could be "the one." His divorce sucked, so we're glad that he's finally back out there and has a real chance for happiness again. We were also excited to get out -- it's been a long time -- and we ended up going to a really nice steakhouse in Buckhead.
But I'm not going to lie. I was a little anxious about the no drinking thing. I've gotten past the evening craving and the longing when I walk past the wine isle in Publix, but I wasn't sure how I'd feel being in a dimly lit restaurant with waiters who wear ties and live music and having sparkling water with my thick juicy steak. Tony knew what I was trying to do, so he didn't pressure me, and I hoped that everyone else, especially Chris, who knows how much I love red wine, would be equally cool.
And all in all, it wasn't terrible.

- Breakfast: Scotch egg and black coffee with unsweetened almond milk (I was excited to find this at Publix)
- Lunch: Salami and sliced veggie wraps / leftover potato and collard green soup when I got home
- Snacks: Blueberries, raspberries, strawberries
- Dinner: Oysters on the half-shell, appetizer. Lots of hot sauce (probably not Whole 30 compliant, but screw it; I didn't eat the crackers). Chopped steak with smothered onions, hash browns with onions and asparagus. Four glasses of seltzer with two limes.
Whole 30 Daily - Day 14
=====================================================================

Congrats on your two weeks! Great job going out for a nice dinner Saturday and sticking to your seltzer! That would be tough for me. And the bread basket - yikes! But feeling good the next morning is a nice thing, no? :)
ReplyDeleteBTW, I drink my coffee black. ;-) I used to like cream in it, but now I just get flavored coffee (only naturally flavored right now!), usually vanilla, and I just drink it black most of the time. If it makes you feel better, I'm going to show my stupidity here and ask, what is a Scotch egg?
Scotch eggs are basically sausage wrapped hard-boiled eggs. Here's a quick recipe. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/350647520959483708/
ReplyDeleteI didn't use this one, though, but the only difference was, I added parsley instead of green onions/chives. Also, I didn't roll it in bread crumbs, I rolled them in crushed pork rinds. This recipe:

Maya said they stink, but hard-boiled eggs always do. The next time, I might try using some pre-made sausage, if I can find some without added sugar.
